2024 Annual Flood Awareness Week to kick off; public preparedness events scheduled

(SKAGIT COUNTY)- Flood Awareness Week officially kicks off on Monday, October 7, 2024 in Skagit County and will run through Friday, October 11, 2024. Flooding has been a serious concern to the Skagit County community since the late 1800s, with the threat of extreme flooding generally occurring in Skagit Valley between the months of October and March.

Measures have been taken throughout the years to reduce the risk of flood damage in the valley. As a part of these preventative measures, the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and Public Works hosts Flood Awareness Week each October to assess and implement ongoing flood preparedness. This year, DEM is offering a free training and webinar for community members to join and learn about flood preparedness for themselves and their families, according to a news release from the county.

“The Skagit Valley is prone to flooding each year and we urge community members to take precaution and be prepared,” said Peter Browning, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. “It is crucial to take a proactive role in your safety, and the safety of your loved ones.”
