Anacortes/San Juan Islands route on alternative schedule through July

(SEATTLE)– The Anacortes/San Juan Islands ferry route will operate on an emergency schedule through at least the end of the month due to the breakdown of the Yakima.

Five ferries typically sail between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands during the busy summer months, but the route went down to four ferries when the Yakima’s generator failed on Sunday, July 16. Washington State Ferries put an emergency schedule into place through the end of July to maintain service until another vessel is available.

Maintenance crews are working to get another ferry ready to step in as quickly as possible.

After the Yakima’s generator failed, the vessel was moved to WSF’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility on Bainbridge Island. Maintenance crews will replace the generator and fix other issues with the ferry. The repairs could take up to three weeks. The Yakima will be replaced by another vessel as soon as possible.
