I-5 lane reductions north of Ferndale start this Tuesday, May 26
(FERNDALE)– Plan now for daytime lane reductions starting next week on Interstate 5 in Whatcom County. Work to replace four culverts currently blocking fish passage require the reductions starting Tuesday, May 26, north of Ferndale.
Contractor crews from Kiewit, working for the Washington State Department of Transportation, will reduce I-5 to one lane in each direction from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 26-29 between State Route 548/Grandview Road and Birch Bay Lynden Road. This will provide a safe work zone for people building a bypass lane in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes.
Later this year, traffic will shift onto that bypass lane, allowing crews to safely build a larger culvert to replace the narrow culvert under the southbound lanes, then the northbound lanes, of I-5. After that, the crews will also replace culverts under Zell Road just north of Willeys Lake Road and under SR 548 at Portal Way.
