Public hearing scheduled for proposed Board of Health expansion

(SKAGIT COUNTY)- During a public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 10:30 AM, the Board of Skagit County Commissioners will hear public comment and review a proposed ordinance to create a new Skagit County Code Chapter 12.01 that would add two at-large members to the Skagit County Board of Health. The public hearing will take place in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room inside the Skagit County Administration Building located at 1800 Continental Place in Mount Vernon.

The current Skagit County Board of Health is composed of the three elected Skagit County Commissioners. The Board of Health enacts local rules and regulations necessary to preserve, promote and improve public health. Like many communities throughout the nation, Skagit County is facing increasingly complex and often crucial public health issues. The proposed expansion would support the governance of Skagit County Public Health by incorporating both elected and appointed community representatives. Broader representation would enable the Board of Health to further evaluate and develop effective public health policies and strategies to address far-reaching issues and improve overall health within Skagit County.

“New and critical public health concerns are continually arising, including issues such as the opioid crisis and the increase in homelessness,” notes Jennifer Johnson, Director of Skagit County Public Health. “The proposed expansion of the Board underscores Skagit County’s commitment to improving the overall health of the Skagit community.”

For those unable to attend the public hearing on December 10th, written comments can be submitted online, by mail, or in-person. Please include “New Skagit County Code Chapter 12.01” in the subject line or letter heading. All written comments must be received by December 10, 2019 at 10:00 AM.
