Return of the trestle: Major delays expected in Snohomish when US 2 project resumes this month

(SNOHOMISH)– One year ago, on a highway not far away, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation began a repaving project of the westbound lanes of the US 2 trestle. Following a months-long postponement, they will return to finish the expansion joint repair and paving they began last spring.

When cold and wet weather moved in last September, crews postponed the work in order to ensure as long a life as possible for the roadway. This summer, up to two additional weekend closures of westbound US 2 between Snohomish and Everett are needed to repave and repair the section of the trestle between the Snohomish River and Interstate 5.

Westbound US 2 closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday:

- Friday, June 21 – Monday, June 24
- Friday, June 28 – Monday, July 1

In the event weather postpones the work, we have identified potential backup closure weekends.

- Friday, July 12 – Monday, July 15
- Friday, July 19 – Monday, July 22
- Friday, August 2 – Monday, August 5

Detour routes will again use State Route 9. To keep traffic moving, and prevent large backups, travelers need to check real-time traffic conditions on the WSDOT traffic app and the WSDOT Traffic Twitter feed. Failure to stay engaged is the path to the dark side – and lengthy traffic delays.
