Swatting incident at Mount Vernon High School
(MOUNT VERNON)- The Mount Vernon Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a weapon offense at Mount Vernon High School at approximately 9:44am Tuesday morning.
According to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department, the reporting party advised that multiple students had been shot in a classroom at the school located in the 1000 block of E. Fulton St. Responding officers coordinated with the Mount Vernon Police Department’s School Resource Officer (SRO) who was on campus at the time of the call. The SRO acting as a law enforcement first responder and school liaison was able to quickly assess the situation and minimize the disruption to students and the community as a whole.
It was determined to be a “swatting” incident, which is an unlawful event where an individual reports an incident to create a heavy police response or a disruption of activity. During the same time period, there were numerous similar events reported throughout the region.
